863,149. Plutonium. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 1, 1960 [Jan. 15, 1959; April 14, 1959], Nos. 1513/59 and 12708/59. Class 39(4). Plutonium metal is produced by reducing a plutonium halide with an alkali or alkaline earth metal in a fused salt medium at above the melting point of plutonium. The halide may be fed to a column at an intermediate point, the reducing metal introduced near the bottom of the column, and plutonium metal withdrawn at the bottom of the column; either or both the halide and the reducing metal may be dissolved in the fused salt before entering the column. The preferred reducing metals are calcium, barium, strontium, and lithium, and the fused salt medium preferably comprises chlorides or fluorides of these metals.
