Drawings to Specification. Class 40(3). [Also in Groups XVIII and XXII] When casting steel up to a predetermined height in an ingot mould containing liquid slag, a physical property of the liquid in the mould at said level is observed and when the observed value of said property begins to vary the rate of casting is reduced or casting is stopped until said value again corresponds to that of the slag, and then casting is continued at a rate which permits separation of the slag and steel until the observed value corresponds to that of steel. The physical property may be absorption or reflection of X-rays or gamma rays, or the effect of a radio-active tracer dispersed in the steel or slag.
