Abstract

863,049. Electrically released switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. July 31, 1959 [Aug. 8, 1958], No. 25510/58. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXVI] Electrical spring contact members in a socket for a circuit board or card are movable against and away from the board under control of a cam bar which may be moved to inoperative position by an electromagnetically controlled trip bar and rod. As shown in Fig. 1 a socket frame 1 having a boardreceiving opening 3 carries a number of spring contacts 2 which are biased away from the opening at their free ends and a spring member 6 which bears against the frame 1, the contacts 2 and the spring member 6 having interposed between them a cam bar 8 which is movable from the inclined position shown to a vertical position to bring the contacts 2 through localized contacts 5, into contact with an inserted board. In a modification, Fig. 7, the spring plate 6 has lugs 10 with bent ends 11 for guiding the entry of a board into the socket, the lugs normally resting on shoulders on the frame and functioning to hold an inserted board in the socket clear of the contacts 2 when the cam 8 is in the inoperative position. On rotating the cam 8 to vertical position, Fig. 8, the spring contacts 2 are urged against the board 4. Insertion or removal of a board 4 while the cam is in operative position may be prevented by latching springs 13, Fig. 11, mounted alongside the contact springs 2 for actuation by the cam and having bent lugs 14 which engage an edge of the board or a hole 15 therein. The cam bar may be operated by a rod 22, Fig. 13, which in operative position is latched, against the action of a spring 29, to a guide plate 27 and the latch 25 may be tripped manually or automatically by an electromagnetically operated trip bar 30. Several boards and sockets may be mounted in a rack and have a common trip bar.
