Abstract

862,896. Adjusting body height. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. June 15, 1959 [June 18, 1958], No. 19511/58. Class 108(2). A levelling valve for an air spring has an actuating beam 2 moved by an operating arm 4 through a crank-pin 7. The beam 2 operates inlet and exhaust valves 8, 9 by its end 2a and a plate 14. A rocking motion of the beam arm 2a will open one or other of the valves without actuating the other valve. A stem 15 pivoted by a pin 16 to the arm 2a moves one or other of pistons 17 when it is displaced from its mid position to damp hydraulically movement of the beam 2. The end 2b of the beam is held in its mid-position by a spring 32 via a stem 29 and a pin 30. When the suspension is in a static condition the beam 2 occupies a horizontal position. A slow movement of the operating arm 4 causes the crankpin 7 to rock the beam 2 about the pin 30, which is held stationary by the spring 32, to operate the appropriate valves 8 or 9. During this movement one of damper pistons 17 will be drawn towards the other, oil being displaced through a restricted orifice into a reservoir. On rapid movement of the operating lever the hydraulic damper will prevent movement of the beam arm 2a the beam pivoting about the pin 16 and the movement of the end 2b being accommodated by the spring 32. The degree of damping may be adjusted by a needle valve.
