Class 108(3) '[Also in Group XIV] In a resiliently mounted vehicle seat (Group XIV), having a frame 19 pivotally mounted by links 14, 15 on a base 10, the link 15 being in the form of a two-armed lever, a combined spring and shock-absorbing force applied to the free arm 23 of the lever is produced by a device having a piston 28 movable in an oil-filled cylinder 24 having a pivot 25 attached to base 10. Helical springs 30, 31 are arranged between piston 28 is movable in an oil-filled cylinder one or more lateral openings 41 and four openings 42 arranged in a circle and of which the lever orifices can be covered by a disc 43 movable on an extension 44 of the piston between the piston surface and a collar 45. When the piston moves upwards liquid can pass through openings 41 and 42 and damping is relatively small but on the downward stroke the oil can only pass through opening 41, the damping being stronger. The end of the piston rod 27 is engageable with different notches of a corrugated sheet 33 on arm 23 so as to alter the effective length of the lever arm for different loads. A spring 48 holds the rod 27 engaged with the appropriate notch but is weak by comparison with springs 30, 31 and does not affect the dynamic behaviour of the system.
