Abstract

862,136. Ear defenders. HENERY, W. L. May 14, 1959 [May 16, 1958; Sept. 22, 1958], Nos. 15869/58 and 30254/58. Class 81 (2). An ear defender comprises a rigid cup carrying an annular cushion 4 of sponge material enclosed in a fluid-tight covering 3, the pores of the sponge being filled with fluid, preferably liquid. The outer covering 3 is continued at 3a, 3b to engage the rim of the cup and hold the cushion in position. When in use, the liquid can be displaced through the pores to allow the ear-piece 1 to fit closely against the ear, but the labyrinthine nature of the sponge effectively prevents the transmission of sound. In the form described a cup-shaped ear-piece 1 is fitted with these cushions and with a sound-absorbent pad 5, and two such ear-pieces are mounted on a head band 11. In a modification a microphone is carried on an arm mounted on a balljoint attached to one ear-piece, so as to be placed close to the mouth, and a telephone earpiece is fitted inside each ear-piece.
