Abstract
1,243,728. Protective ear cups. GENTEX CORP. 14 May, 1969 [20 May, 1968], No. 24705/69. Heading A3V. [Also in Division A5] An earcup for protection against sound comprises a rigid shell 20, e.g. of pastics, which is of elliptical section and to a flange 24 of which is bonded a sponge plastics pad 30, the pad being of elliptically annular shape have a base 30a and a pair of flanges 30b, 30c forming a channel 30d, the flange 30b being of a constant height and the rim of flange 30c shaped to conform to a wearer's head. The rim 30b may be dispensed with or alternatively also shaped. In modifications the base 30a may be hollow or fitted with a foam rubber core. Also a third flange may project from the channel 30d. A pressure equalizer may be inserted in the shell 20 comprising an annular grommet 40 formed with a helical inner surface, a spool being inserted therein forming a leakage path for pressure equalization. A coil spring may be inserted in a flap 30f of the pad to retain the pad on the shell.
