Abstract
862,091. Arcing preventing in switches. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGSG.m.b.H. Jan. 24, 1958 [Jan. 24, 1957], No. 2435/58. Class 38 (5). The contacts of an electro-hydraulic or electro-pneumatic alternating current contactor are timed to open in the vicinity of a current zero by arranging for the discharge of the pressure-fluid from an operating cylinder under the control of a rotary valve which is driven synchronously and phased in accordance with the phase displacement of the controlled load current. The contacts, e.g. 28, 33, Fig. 2, are opened by springs 37<SP>1</SP>, 37<SP>11</SP> and closed by pressure-fluid supplied by a gear pump 9 driven by a synchronous motor 3 which may be energized initially from the voltage of the A.C. supply but subsequently is energized by or in accordance with the load current. The motor 3 also drives rotary valves 65, 68 and an auxiliary contact device 89, Fig. 3, associated with each set of contactor contacts. To close the contactor contacts, a switch 82 is closed to energize a solenoid 73 which moves a pilot valve 71 to the left to admit pressure-fluid from a pipe 76 to the left-hand side of a main valve 60. The valve 60 is now moved to the right to admit pressure fluid from a pipe 43 to the cylinder 56 to force a piston 26 upwardly to close the contactor contacts. To open the contactor contacts, the switch 82 is opened, but the circuit of the solenoid 73 remains completed at contacts 81 until insulating parts 90 of the rotary contact device 89 pass beneath brushes 88, 92. When the solenoid is de-energized, the pilot valve 71 is restored to the position shown to permit the supply of pressure fluid to the right-hand side of the valve 60 when the rotary valve 68 is turned into a suitable position by the synchronous motor. This restores the valve 60 to the position shown and permits the discharge of fluid from the cylinder 56 immediately the valve 65 is opened by the synchronous motor.
