Abstract
861,936. Sewage disposal; gravity-separation apparatus. ADAMS-HYDRAULICS Ltd. June 23, 1959 [July 4, 1958], No. 21498/58. Classes 46 and 111. In a system that permits liquid waste alone or both liquid and solid waste to be discharged from a vessel depending on port regulations, a collecting tank 1 is divided by partition 6 into a primary settling chamber 2 for soil waste, which is passed into it from line 4, and a secondary settling chamber 3, into which waste water is passed by line 5. Scum baffles 11 and 12 are provided to prevent substantial amounts of scum being transferred from one chamber to the other. An outlet pipe 13 is provided in the secondary settling chamber 3 and this is connected by line 14 to an ejector pump 15, which empties the effluent through pipe 16, for example, over the side of the ship. The outlet 13 is kept open permanently, and an emergency gravity leak is provided through line 17. In the bottom of the two settling chambers are provided valves 18 and 19. These valves are kept closed when the ship is in harbour or in other restricted waters where discharge of solid waste has to be limited. The waste in both primary and secondary settling chambers may be agitated by passing in compressed air or steam or water under pressure, through lines 24 and 25. Line 21 leads to an ejector pump (not shown) but line 21 and valve 22 may be dispsened with so that the discharge from both primary and secondary settling chambers goes to ejector 15, while chemicals for treatment of the waste may be added, either to lines 4 and 5 or at different levels in the settling tank. Furthermore, partition 6 may have a number of closable apertures so that its effective height may be varied. If the sanitary system has a common outlet for soil and waste water, line 5 may be dispensed with and all waste passed into the primary chamber 2 by line 4.
