Abstract

1,238,171. Treating waste waters. E. B. BURDON (ENGS.) Ltd. 4 July, 1968 [7 July, 1967], No. 31312/67. Heading C1C. A waste water detoxicating apparatus incorporates a reaction vessel 14 having at least one valved outlet duct 19 and an aerator 30, means 8c, 9c for adding reagents to the contents of the reaction vessel, a vertically adjustable device, e.g. a flexible pipe 25c, for extracting detoxicated effluent from the reaction vessel, a filtering device 18 to receive sludge from the outlet duct and containing at least one withdrawable filtering element, e.g. a sheet of filter paper, and a filtrate-receiving vessel 20. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, sewage is introduced into the reaction vessel 14 via a feed pipe 28 and is aerated. Precipitants &c. are added to the vessel 14 from containers 6, 7 via feed pipes 8c, 9c. The free end of the flexible pipe 25c is vertically adjustable and discharges clear liquid from the vessel 14 into an outlet pipe 17 when a valve 26 is opened. Clear filtrate is discharged from the vessel 20 and reaches the outlet pipe 17 after passing a three-way cock 27, a valve 24, and an oil separator 28a. Insufficiently clarified filtrate may be returned to the vessel 14 by a pump 23 and a conduit 22. Sewage may be introduced into vessels 3, 4 by way of pipes 28<SP>1</SP>, 28<SP>11</SP> for preliminary treatment by aerators and addition of chemicals from containers 3, 4. Clear liquid is discharged via pipes 15 or 16 into outlet pipe 17 and sludge and partially treated sewage are transferred to the vessel 14 via a pump 13 and pipes, 12a, 12b, 12. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the reaction vessel may be subdivided by vertical partitions, the precipitants &c. are added via an inclined pipe, and more than one filtratereceiving vessel is provided. The reaction vessel may be equipped with depth- and pH-meters, and the filtering element may be in the form of various kinds of belts.
