Abstract
974,211. Removing detergents from waste-waters. GENERAL MILLS Inc. May 29, 1963 [June 8, 1962], No. 21498/63. Heading C1C. An aqueous liquid containing an anionic waste, particularly a detergent, is treated with an acidic treatment solution of trioctylamine in vegetable oils, kerosine or fuel oil. The separation of the two phases is aided by aeration, which also may biologically degrade the detergent. The treatment liquid is regenerated by reaction with an alkaline saline solution and the detergent and any sludge is discharged being now more easily disposal sewage. An aqueous liquid containing a detergent is introduced at predetermined velocity, to injection mixer 12 by inlet 11. Treatment liquid from tank 14 and available-quantity control tank 18 is injected by inlet 21 and an acid from tank 23 is also sucked in by way of line 28 to give a treating liquid of predetermined composition. The mixture of aqueous and treating liquids is conducted to spray device 34 to be discharged into treating tank 36 at the beginning of a tortuous flow path and with the added effect of gas supplied through spargers 52 separates into purified aqueous phase discharged at 54 and organic amine/detergent phase discharged to mixer 62 via pipe 61 under the control of float 66. Caustic solution from tank 63 is drawn into the mixer and the mixture separates into the regenerated organic phase stored in tank 71 and waste discharged via weir 73. Any sludge is removed by tap 83, screw-type skimmer 84 and screw-conveyer 87. The mixer and slude removers described may be replaced by other types. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the apparatus is modified in respect of the mixer 62, the spray device 34, the aerators 52, the baffles 37 and the weir 73.
