A nuclear fuel element comprises a plurality of hollow ducts of fissile material one within the other and spaced apart to allow coolant flow between them. The ducts may have circular or other cross-section. They may have fins which act as spacers and may interlock with fins on adjacent ducts (Fig. 4). Mg, Be, or Al caning may be provided. Cylindrical ducts 1, 2, 3 are supported by spider arms 4, 4<SP>1</SP> from cross arms 7 between load-bearing pillars 8, 8<SP>1</SP>.
