Abstract
861,540. Cold separation of air. SULZER FRERES S.A. Nov. 13, 1959 [Nov. 15, 1958], No. 38620/59. Class 8(2). In a compressed air separation process wherein cooling is effected in serially arranged heat exchangers 5, 8, 12 traversed by nitrogen leaving the head of a column 22, the necessary cold required to condense a portion of effluent nitrogen withdrawn from the outlet duct 17 is met by expanding at a value 24 a portion of liquid oxygen withdrawn from the base of the column through ducts 33, 23 and passing it through an exchanger 25 also traversed by said nitrogen effluent which is thereby liquefied, the so vaporized oxygen then being further warmed in an exchanger 26 in countercurrent to a portion of itself after compression at 28 and preliminary cooling in a coil 30 traversed by an external refrigerant and after which the so cooled saturated oxygen vapour is returned through duct 23 to the column 22. Product liquid oxygen is discharged through a duct 35, compressed oxygen gas through a duct 29 and uncompressed oxygen gas through a duct 27. The cooling nitrogen is work-expanded in turbines 10, 6 between exchangers 12, 8 and 5. Argon-rich gas is withdrawn from the column 22 through a duct 34 and serves to assist cooling of the incoming air.
