Class 117 Pieces of timber are sorted according to length by being conveyed transversely with their one ends in line, so that spaced members in their path are actuated in dependence upon the said lengths, and the pieces are delivered to various collecting compartments, and the pieces in each compartment are then further sorted according to length after adjusting the position of the spaced members. Pieces of timber 1 are fed to a conveyer 3 which delivers them to a conveyer 5 along the path of which discharge places 6-9 are arranged, and arms 10-12 respectively are associated with the discharge places and are actuated by members 13-15 respectively. As shown in Fig. 2 the one ends of the pieces 1<SP>1</SP>, 1<SP>11</SP> are aligned, and each member 13-15 is adjustable to take up a position corresponding to the shortest length of a piece it will allow to pass the respective discharge place. Thus if a piece is sufficiently long to strike member 13, the arm 10 is moved into contact with the conveyer 5 and the piece fed to cullector rails 20 and compartment 16. Pieces of shorter length are fed to the other collecting stations along the lower run of the conveyer, and if a piece is of sufficient length to strike one of the members 14 or 15, an arm 11 or 12 will be raised and the piece removed through discharge place 7 or 8 to collector rails 21 or 22 and compartments 17 or 18. The shortest lengths pass to rails 23 and compartment 19. The pieces in each compartment are then further sorted to provide, for example, groups of timber pieces varying in length by 1 foot, after adjusting the positions of the actuating members.
