Abstract

860,915. Windscreen washing systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 27, 1959 [Dec. 11, 1958; Feb. 15, 1959], No. 40374/59. Class 138(1). A windscreen washing system includes a pump started by a manually operable device and stopped after a predetermined time by a thermoresponsive device. A centrifugal pump 44, Fig. 1, supplying cleaning liquid from a reservoir 10 through a conduit 54 and nipple 56 to a discharge nozzle (not shown), is driven by an electric motor 24 having a manually operable starting switch 96, Fig. 4, and which is adapted to be stopped after a predetermined running period by a thermo-responsive switch 84. The latter comprises an electric heating coil 86 wound around a bimetallic element 74 carrying at one end a contact 82, whilst the other end is secured to a compensator bimetallic strip 68. On closing the switch 96 the pump motor 24 is energized from a battery 80 through a circuit including the bimetallic strips 68, 74 and the heating coil 86. The motor 24 runs initially at a slow speed since the heater 86 is in series therewith, but when the element 74 is heated sufficiently to close contacts 82, 84 the heater 86 is short-circuited and the motor 24 runs at an increased speed. On observing this the operator releases the push button operating the switch 96. The motor 24 then continues to run until the element 74 has cooled sufficiently to open the contacts 82, 84. An alternative embodiment includes an additional manually operable switch controlling a circuit providing automatic intermittent operation of the motor 24.
