Abstract

Synthetic waxes are prepared by melting solid waxy hydrocarbons produced by the Fischer-Tropsch process and holding the temperature at about 100 DEG C. until an initiator which is a peroxide is introduced into the molten mass, passing an oxygen-containing gas continually during addition of the peroxide and subsequently, raising the temperature after the addition of the peroxide to not above 125 DEG C., adding a metal catalyst from Group IIb of the Periodic Table, and raising the temperature to below the decomposition temperature of the wax, e.g. 140-155 DEG C., for several hours, e.g. 3-6 hours. Preferably, oxidation is stopped when the wax has an acid value of 10-20 and a saponification value of 30-60. If desired, the oxidized wax may be treated with a salt of a metal of Group IIa or IIb to form the soaps of acids present. Specified peroxide catalysts are dibenzoyl, urea and lauryl peroxides. Specification 786,654 is referred to.ALSO:A polish base comprises (1) 40 parts of oxidized Fischer-Tropsch wax with acid value 10-15 and saponification value 35-60; (2) 4 parts of 2 - amino - 2 - methyl - 1 - propanol; (3) 8 parts of oleic acid; (4) 1 part of borax; and (5) 240 parts of water.
