A brushing mechanism for cleaning metal strip, sheet or rod comprises a power-driven, rotary brush journalled in supporting means of a brush-surrounding housing having openings for allowing a travelling strip to enter and leave the housing, there being suction ports disposed in the region of both of the openings. As shown, the stand comprises end frames 1, 2 secured to a base frame 9 carried on rollers 10 and reciprocated by a piston-cylinder assembly along rails 13, the frame 9 having on the underside thereof a circular rail 18 supported on flanged rollers 19 ; the rod 22 of a piston-cylinder assembly 23 carries a rack engaging a gear 25 concentric to the rail 18 whereby the stand is swivelled about a vertical axis. Slidably fitted in openings 3, 4 in the frames 1, 2 are bearing blocks 26 ... 29, the blocks 27, 29 each having inset therein piston-cylinder assemblies 42, 43, and 44, 45 so that the blocks 26, 27 and 28, 29 are urged apart. The blocks 26, 28 are vertically adjusted by screws 46, 47 driven in unison or independently by an electric motor 50 and through a clutch and gear-boxes 51 ; the blocks 27, 29 are adjusted in a similar manner by screws 48, 49. The blocks are retained in the openings 3, 4 by keeper plates 30 and journalled in the upper and lower blocks 26, 28 and 27, 29 are cylindrical rotary brushes 57, 59 driven by hydraulic or electric motors. Withdrawal axially of each brush complete with the respective blocks and motor as a unit is made by retracting the screws 46... 49 to relieve the clamping pressure on the blocks, and the plates 30. U-shaped housings 62, 72 provided with openings 63, 73 connected to suction conduits 67, 77 receive scale and debris thrown off by the rotating brushes, and vertically retractable guard plates 81, 82 have on the opposed edges thereof brushes 85, 87 between which the strip passes. The strip may pass horizontally between the brushes 57, 59 or be flexed over one or other of the brushes ; if the axes of the brushes are vertically offset the strip is flexed over each brush so that the working faces of the brushes engage concave portions of the strip.
