Abstract

860,434. Glass-metal seals. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 10, 1958 [Dec. 3, 1956], No. 36928/56. Class 36. [Also in Group XXIII] A lens is formed by fusing within a substantially circular metal frame, arranged with its axis vertically, a body of glass, the volume of which is such that the opposed surfaces of the glass both acquire-solely as a result of surface tension and gravity-a spherical configuration while the glass is soft and retain this shape as the glass solidifies. As shown in Fig. 1, the frame 1 has a flange 2 and the glass body initially has the shape 5. In Fig. 4, the frame is a tube 1 having an internally projecting flange 12. The glass body may be shaped to form a bead prior to being brought into contact with the frame or a larger quantity of glass may be sealed to the frame, the excess removed by rough grinding and the assembly reheated to form the lens. The assembly may be inverted periodically during sealing to modify the curvature of the surfaces. Specification 572,020 is referred to.
