Abstract

The thermostability of polyoxymethylenes having molecular weights of at least 15,000 is improved by mixing at least 0.001% by weight of a synthetic polyamide into the preformed polymer. The term "polyoxymethylene" includes the glycol, ethers and esters, e.g. the diacetate. Specified polyamides are polyhexamethylene sebacamide; a terpolymer of polycaprolactam, polyhexamethylene adipamide and polyhexamethylene sebacamide; N-methoxymethyl polyhexamethylene adipamide; condensation products of 1,1,6,6-tetramethylhexamethylene diamine and sebacic acid, 2,11-diaminododecane and 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl adipic acid, 2,5-dimethylpiperazine and glutaric acid and suberic acid, bis-3-aminopropylether and adipic acid and 4,4-dimethylheptamethylene diamine and sebacic acid. Other materials which may be included in the composition are antioxidants such as the phenolic compounds described in Specification 860,411 and di-betanaphthyl - p - phenylenediamine, and copper stearate, as well as fillers &c. Up to about 50% of polyamide may be used although the preferred amount is about 1%. Uses.-Manufacture of pressure-containers, films, fibres, filaments, sheets, rods &c., bottles, toys, gears and dishes. Specification 744,336 also is referred to.
