Abstract

A backsize composition in the form of a substantially homogeneous and relatively stable aqueous dispersion adapted to be applied to a face of a backing to form a thin coat thereon having high release characteristics, comprises a water-dispersible film-former agent having the characteristics of toughness, flexibility and good adhesion to the surface to which the backsize composition is to be applied, and a lesser amount of a water-insoluble, water-dispersible release agent incompatible with the film-former, the release agent being a fatty alcohol ester copolymer or a fatty acid ester copolymer, such as a vinyl acetate-vinyl stearate copolymer, a stearyl maleatevinyl acetate copolymer or an octadecyl acrylateacrylic acid copolymer. The film-former agent may be polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, a vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, polyvinyl acetate or an acrylate copolymer. If incompatibility is insufficient it may be increased by use of a thickening agent such as sodium polyacrylate.
