859,594. Underpinning buildings. WESTWOOD & CO. Ltd., J. Dec. 19, 1958 [Dec. 20, 1957; April 17,1958], Nos. 39598/57 and 12202/58. Class 20(2) A building is underpinned by means of a girder comprising parts 1 bolted end-to-end. The lower part of the ends may be spaced slightly apart by suitable deflection of the girder parts so that when bolted together these spaces are closed and the girder stressed or the plates 4 on the ends may be welded at a slight angle. Fig. 5 shows a building in which it is desired to remove the part 6 of a wall. Gaps 10, 11 &c. above the part 6 are cut successively, across the building, into which girder parts are packed. When the girder parts span the part 6, they are bolted together to support the upper part 9 of the wall while the part 6 is removed.
