Abstract

858,966. Electromagnetic fuel injectors. BENDIX CORPORATION, [formerly BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION] March 17,1958 [May 10, 1957], No. 8527/58. Classes 7(3) and 7(6). [Also in Group XXXV] An electromagnetic fuel injection nozzle comprises a plate valve 48 urged by a spring 44 towards a plurality of fuel outlet orifices 68 and forming the armature of a solenoid 22. The coil 22 is surrounded by a body 10, 28, arranged to form two poles 57, 59, facing raised lands 52, 54 on the valve 48, the poles 57, 59, being slotted to reduce their surface area. The fuel flows through a central conduit 14, the wall of which is slotted at 16 to reduce eddy currents, and through subsidiary conduits 18 so that fuel reaches the orifices 68 from all directions, the spring 44 being star-shaped to permit fuel flow therethrough. On energization of the coil the armature 48 is lifted off the orifices 68 to permit injection and travels upwards until the poles 52, 57 are in contact, the poles 59 being arranged above the plane of the poles 57 so that an air gap of 0À002 inches is maintained between the poles 59, 54, when the valve is raised to facilitate separation of the armature from the pole 57 when the coil is de-energized. The valve 48 is of silicon steel with a chromium-plated wearresistant surface 50 and the orifices 68 are carried by a stainless steel plate 62 and discharge into a tapered chamber 60 in a member 56 screwthreaded into a brass body member 40 and adjustable to adjust the distance of the valve 48 from the poles 57, 59. The member 40 is also adjustable to adjust the initial tension of spring 44. Specification 858,961 is referred to.
