Abstract
In producing calcined gypsum, i.e. a form of plaster of Paris, from by-product gypsum obtained by the action of sulphuric acid on phosphate rock and containing, as impurities, phosphoric, sulphuric and hydrofluoric acids, these acids are neutralized by treatment with ammonia. The by-product gypsum is, preferably, slurried in water and sufficient ammonia is added to bring the pH value of the slurry to between 8 and 10. Water is then removed by filtration, centrifugation or evaporation to leave a cake, which is calcined at a temperature between 250 and 400 DEG F. to convert the gypsum into calcium sulphate hemihydrate. Any residual acid impurities in the calcined gypsum may be neutralized by treating it with ammonia.
