In a colour television transmitting system for signals of the N.T.S.C. type in which the frequencies of the line and field synchronizing pulses and of the chrominance sub-carrier wave vary in response to variations in the frequency of electric supply mains the sub-carrier generator is controlled so that, in response to variations in the frequency of the supply mains, only discrete changes of frequency each of which results in a sub-carrier having a frequency which is an odd integral multiple of half line or half line and half field are possible. Known means may be employed to effect this control. Since, with such a system, the discrete changes of frequency may occur at any instant, intermittent phase reference signals (the "colour-bursts" of the N.T.S.C. system) are insufficient to ensure the production of rapid changes in the frequency of the local subcarrier generator in a co-operating receiver. To overcome this difficulty the system of the present invention utilizes, in addition to normal "colourburst" signals, a continuous reference carrier wave the frequency of which bears a predetermined relationship to the chrominance carrier wave. A receiver utilizing such a reference wave which comprises the sound carrier wave is described with reference to a "block" diagram (not shown). In this arrangement the sound and vision carriers are combined at I.F. frequency and by suitable division a wave of sub-carrier frequency is produced and employed as a conventional homodyning oscillation to recover the colour signals from the received chrominance sub-carrier. The "colour-burst" signals which are also transmitted being employed to control the phase of the (superheterodyne) receiver local oscillation. Since the frequency of the sound carrier wave is made to vary (at the transmitter) in accordance with the discrete changes in the frequency of the chrominance subcarrier wave constant synchronization of the homodyning oscillation results.
