Abstract

858,049. Building units. BOWATER RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. July 15, 1957 [July 16, 1956], No. 21976/56. Class 87(1) [Also in Group VIII] A sound-absorbing panel for walls and ceilings includes a region, in which sound is absorbed, constituted wholly or partly by a mass of fibrous material, perforations in a face of the panel leading to said region, the perforations being bridged by material forming diaphragms, spaced from the region in which sound is absorbed, which diaphragms will transmit incident sound to said region. The material forming the diaphragms is preferably in the form of an air-impermeable, non-porous and non-perforated, sheet covering the exposed surface of the element. As shown, a facing sheet 1 comprising a plastic film of vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer or polythene laminated to or coated onto a sheet of kraft or other paper is adhesively secured to a sheet 2 of e.g. hardboard, asbestos cement or metal, the plastic film being uppermost. The sheet 2 has perforations 3 in it which are bridged by the facing 1 which thereby forms diaphragms 4. These perforations lead to a sound absorbing region 5 containing a glass fibre mat 6. A sheet 7 of kraft paper provides a backing to the glass fibre mat 6 which is in turn held within a wooden framework 8. The adhesive used to secure the sheet 1 may be applied all over it, or the diaphragm areas may be kept free of adhesive. In Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) the absorbing region comprises a fibreboard with cavities therein, and the sheet 2 is omitted. The cavities may have glass fibre wadding in their interior, or may have loose fibres on their surfaces. The cavities may be of larger crosssection than the perforations leading to them. The facing layer forming the diaphragms may be printed to provide an ornamental surface. The sizes of the cavities and diaphragms may vary over the board.
