Abstract

857,979. Electrophonic musical instruments. KARSTED, J. W., and SUMNER, I. F. Feb. 20, 1959, No. 5990/59. Class 88 (2). [Also in Group XXXIX] The output of an electrophonic instrument is divided between a treble loud-speaker 20 and a bass loud-speaker 36; the two loud-speakers are located in horizontally separated compartments 10 and 12 joined by a sound passage through an intermediate compartment 15, each loud-speaker compartment 10, 12 having also a sound outlet (not shown), and the treble loudspeaker 20 has a rotating horn 25 which sweeps past both the sound outlet of its compartment 10 and the entrance of the passage leading to the bass loud-speaker compartment 12. The rotating horn 25 produces a vibrato by means of the Doppler effect and also distributes the output of the treble loud-speaker between its direct outlet and the outlet of the bass loudspeaker compartment, the intermediate compartment 15 introducing reverberation. The bass loud-speaker 36 also has a rotating horn 40, the axes of rotation of the two horns 25 and 40 being mutually perpendicular.
