Abstract

A water-base emulsion type coating composition comprises a paint latex of a styrene-butadiene or butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, an aqueous phase. and at least 0,1 % by weight of the latex solids of a compound of the formula R NHCH (CH3) CH2 COOM where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 8 to 18 carbon atoms and M is sodium or potassium. The compound is preferably added in an amount of 0,1 - 15% and improves the freeze resistance of the paint. R may be octyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, octadecenyl, octadecadienyl or mixtures thereof such as found in the amines resulting from the ammonolysis, dehydration and hydrogenation of the fatty acids resulting from the hydrolysis of coconut, tallow or soybean oil. The latex is preferably one obtained by emulsion polymerization, has particle sizes of 0,04 - 0,2 micron and a pH of 8,5 - 10,5. The water content may be 45-65% by weight of the latex. It should be capable of agitation at 12,000 r.p.m. for half an hour without graining or changing viscosity. The Examples describe (1) 200 parts of emulsion copolymer of 60% styrene, 40% butadiene containing 45% solids with 0,45 part of sodium N-coco-beta-amino-butyrate (2) 200 parts of a copolymer of 67% styrene, 33% butadiene containing 48% solids with 1,44 parts of sodium N-coco-beta-amino-butyrate (3) as in (1) with the potassium salt (4) 200 parts of a high acrylonitrile content copolymer ("Hycar" 1561, "Hycar" is a Registered Trade Mark) containing 40% solids with 2,40 parts of potassium Ncoco-beta-amino-butyrate. Other examples refer to the use of latices of unspecified rubbery materials.
