Abstract
In a process for the production of high molecular weight polyethylene terephthalate by trans-esterifying dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol and subjecting the diethylene glycol terephthalate thus produced to condensation polymerization in the presence of a catalyst, the condensation polymerization catalyst is intimately mixed with a small quantity of the reaction mixture resulting from the transesterification reaction and the resulting mixture is added in a solid and compact form to the batch which is to be subjected to condensation. polymerization. The catalyst may be dispersed in a small quantity of molten reaction mixture from the trans-esterification reaction, the resulting dispersion is solidified, broken up or pulverized and then pressed to form tablets which are added to the batch to be subjected to condensation polymerization. Alternatively tablets are formed from mixtures of catalyst and solid reaction mixture. Preferably the catalyst is added when the batch has a relative viscosity of from 1,08 to 1,2 and is under a vacuum of lower than 15mm. Hg. Examples are given employed tablets prepared from pulverised trans-esterification reaction product, zinc acetate and antimony trioxide.
