Abstract

Solid polyethylene is prepared by subjecting gaseous ethylene to pressures greater than 500 atmospheres and to temperatures above 15 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst from the group consisting of esters of hyponitrous acid. Methyl, ethyl, isobutyl, isopropyl, benzyl and allyl nitrites are mentioned and may be added as a solution in petroleum ether. Batch or continuous bulk polymerization at between 1000 and 2000 atmospheres may be used, and products prepared in the range 15 DEG to 50 DEG C. are denser and stiffer, e.g. from 0.935 to 0.952, than those prepared at from 50 DEG to 120 DEG C. which are however produced at a higher rate. The polymer in the form of a fine white powder, may be purified by extracting with hot xylene, filtering and precipitating with methanol, when it may be moulded to a film.
