Abstract
A polyethylene wax having a relative flexibility of at least 6 (and other defined physical properties) is prepared by polymerizing ethylene, optionally in the presence of an inert solvent, to a conversion of more than 20% at 160 DEG to 190 DEG C. and 400 to 600 atmospheres in the presence of a free-radical-forming initiator, to form a polyethylene having a melt viscosity at 120 DEG C. in the range 100,000 to 500,000 centistokes (and other defined physical properties), and then immediately partially depolymerizing the free-flowing melt obtained by heating in the absence of oxygen, optionally after removal of solvent, at a temperature in the range of 290 DEG to 450 DEG C. The Specification describes a continuous flow type apparatus for the production of the said wax and exemplifies the use of di-t-Bu-peroxide as catalyst. The products find particular application in coating paper or fabrics.
