Abstract

857,904. Hopper discharge. OWENSILLINOIS GLASS CO. July 15, 1959, No. 24260/59. Class 78(1). [Also in Group XXIII] Apparatus for feeding frit to the surface of molten glass flowing through a forehearth includes a supply hopper for gravity feeding the frit to a transverse conveyer having a discharge outlet overlying the molten glass, the frit falling on to the surface of the molten glass through an enclosed hood containing interior baffles. In one form the frit falls from a hopper, through an adjustable gate into the conduit 23 containing a screw conveyer 18 which discharges it through an opening 31 into a hood having sloping side walls 33 but parallel end walls. A number of shafts 37 pass through the hoodcarrying baffles 35. Each shaft 37 carries at its end outside the hood, an arm 38 with a screw 39, moving in a slot in a bar 41, by which the shaft and the baffle may be clamped in a position of adjustment. The baffles 35 do not extend the full width of the hood but occupy a central zone defined by intermediate walls parallel to the end walls, A cooling air blast is directed through this central zone through a pipe 55 and also, through other pipes, not shown, through the zones between the intermediate walls and the end walls. The tapered hood ends in a chamber of rectangular section 45 through which pass pipes 46 having a further baffling action. The pipes connect tanks at either side of the chamber and cooling water is circulated through pipes 52, 53. The whole unit is mounted on levelling- screws 49 on refractory blocks 47 forming the walls of the channel in the forehearth through which the molten glass runs.
