Abstract

857,872. Crimping yarns, twist tubes &c., yarn guides. SCRAGG & SONS Ltd., E. Nov. 27, 1958 [Feb. 5, 1958], No. 3705/58. Classes 120(2) and 120(3). Apparatus for false-twisting yarn e.g. in a crimping process, comprises at least one surface conforming to a figure of revolution and having a high coefficient of friction relative to the yarn, means for producing relative movement between the yarn and the surface so as to rotate the yarn, and a resilient constraining device acting on the yarn in the vicinity of the surface to maintain not less than a predetermined pressure therebetween. As shown in Fig. 1, yarn 13 fed by roll 14 is passed through rotating cylindrical friction members 11, 12 (so that it is engaged and twisted by portions 11a, 12a) by a roller 16, carried on a spring 19, and rollers 15, 17. In the apparatus of Fig. 4, yarn 13, travelling upwardly through members 21, 22, is traversed circumferentially around engaging surfaces 21a, 22a by a constraining guide eye 26 on a resilient wire 29 carried on a wharve 30 rotated by a belt 31. In a similar apparatus, Figs. 5 and 6, comprising the stationary bushes 21, 22, a rigidly mounted guide 36 on rotating wharve 37 co-operates with a double, resilient, lagging member comprising eyes 38, 39, carried on wire portions 40, 41, mounted on a support 42 which is freely rotatable around the bush 22 on a bearing ring 43 and is dragged by tension in the yarn.
