Abstract

857,871. Sheet-delivery apparatus. DICKINSON & CO. Ltd., J. Feb. 4, 1959 [Jan. 15, 1958], No. 1406/58. Class 100(1) A method of overlapping and piling paper or like sheets comprises successively feeding the sheets at relatively high speed into a station, conveying the sheets through the station at reduced speed to enable sheets successively entering the station to overlap a sheet already in the station, and thereafter forwarding the overlapped sheets at an increased speed into an aligning station in which the leading edges of the overlapped sheets are aligned to form a pile. As shown, upper and lower endless tape conveyers 10, 11 are driven at high speed while an endless tape conveyer 14 is driven at a lower speed. The tapes of the upper conveyer 10 are supported by rollers 15 secured to a driven shaft 16, while the tapes of the lower conveyer 11 are supported by rollers 17 on a driven shaft 18. The shaft 16 is carried by a pair of bell-crank levers 20 pivotally mounted on a shaft 21. The rollers 15 can be lowered by actuation of the bell-crank lever 20 to grip the tapes of upper and lower conveyers, 10, 11 between the rollers 15, 17, thereby driving the tapes at high speed. Rollers 22, carried by bell-crank levers 23 pivotally mounted on a shaft 24 co-operate with driven rollers 25 (Fig. 2, not shown) on the shaft 18, Fig. 1, to feed the conveyer 14 at low speed. In operation, sheets are fed in the direction of the. arrow C between the conveyers 10, 11. As the first sheet of a batch to be overlapped and subsequently piled reaches the rollers 15, 17 the rollers 15 are raised and the rollers 22 lowered by cams, not shown, actuating the bell-crank levers. As each sheet is gripped between the rollers 22 and 25 (Fig. 2, not shown) its rear edge drops and is pushed downwardly by cams 34 to permit the next sheet to overlap, this action being repeated for subsequent sheets until the required number of sheets have been overlapped, whereupon the rollers 22 are raised and the rollers 15 lowered to feed the batch of overlapped sheets to a platform 38. The leading edges of the sheets are aligned by a cam-operated stop member 39 such that the sheets form a pile.
