[Also in Group XXIV] A baling machine having a continuously operated feed mechanism 81, Fig. 1, up which material passes from an inlet end to an outlet position, and from which the material is intermittently passed to the bale forming means 2, is provided with means 84 and 153 for causing the material to return from the outlet position to the inlet end of the feed mechanism 81 during those periods when transfer of material to the bale forming mechanism 2 must temporarily cease. The baling mechanism 2 is of the kind which rolls a cylindrical bale 43 between tensioned belts 16, 17. When the bale is of sufficient size the action of the belts on associated levers 22, 28 causes a conveyer 84 between the feed mechanism 81 and the baling mechanism 2 to pivot upwards, Fig. 4. The incoming material on the feed mechanism 81 then passes up the conveyer 84 to a reversible rotary impelling means 154 transferring the material to a conveyer 153 that carries the material back to deflecting plates 218 causing the material to drop onto the inlet end of the conveyer 81. After a completed bale has been discharged from the baling mechanism 2, the lower tension arm 22 drops and this causes the conveyer 84 to revert to its normal position for conveying material from the feed mechanism 81 to the baling mechanism 2; the reversible rotary impelling means 154 changing its direction of motion to assist the feeding of material to the baling mechanism. Bale-tying mechanism. When the lower tension arm 22 reaches a bale finishing position, it actuates a trip mechanism causing a twine tube 47, Fig. 1, to drop to a lower position and present the free end of the twine projecting therefrom to the material moving into the bale rolling area. Shortly after the twine has been entrained in this material, the feed of the material to the baling mechanism is temporarily diverted as above and a sweep of the twine tube 47 lengthwise of the bale causes the twine to be wrapped spirally about the bale. Bale-discharging mechanism. At the end of the tying operation, the twine tube 47 is returned to its original raised position and automatically operated means causes the bale rolling chamber to open by separation of trip rollers 19 and 26 whereupon the completed bale is discharged.
