Abstract
857,805. Labelling machines. FAIREST Ltd., M. Oct. 14, 1959 [Oct. 14, 1958], No. 32685/58. Class 73. A labelling machine has a pick-up 4 movable to positions in which its face is gummed, in which the gummed face receives a label and in which the face is upright, perpendicular to and at one side of a straight conveyer 2 for upright articles 3, an upright transfer-pusher 6 movable parallel to the conveyer through an upright aperture in the said face to detatch a gummed label, a suction delivery member 11 oscillating between a position facing the pusher and a position facing across the conveyer where means 14 and 15 halt and press the article on to the gummed face of the label. Neck 10 and body 9 labels are fed from stacks 73 and 74 which reciprocate above the pick-up 4 to deliver labels on to face pads 54 on the sides of the square pick-up 4 which have been gummed by a pair of rollers 7 on spring-urged bell-crank levers, Fig. 3 (not shown). A cam plate 55 disengages the rollers 7 as they pass over the corners of the pick-up. The labels are held by suction holes 88 to the pusher 6 which is moved horizontally by cam-operated cranks 85, 86 to transfer them to suction holes 91 and 92 on the body and neck pads 89 and 90 of the member 11. The member 11 is then turned on its pivot 37 to present the labels towards the conveyer and a suction motor 95 operates to tilt the pad 90 ready to conform with the bottle neck. Bottles 3 are spaced in succession on the conveyer 2 by a worm 12 which co-operates adjustably with a guide-rail 13. A stop 15 moves out to halt the bottle whilst a shaped pusher 14 presses it against the gummed face of the label. Two pairs of brushes 112 and 113 are pivoted at 110 in a housing 109 on a "rule jointed" linkage 116 which is spring-biased at 119. The housing 109 is slid forward along a bar 107 so that an adjustable rod 115 operates the " rule joint " causing the brushes to open out scissorwise on either side of the member 11 to wipe-on the outer edges of the labels. The stop 15 and pusher 14 withdraw and the bottle advances to where a second stop 15A operates, whilst a second pusher 14A completes the label application against a presser device 17. Under the main casing of the machine a shaft 19 is chain driven from an electric motor and carries a cam 24 to operate the pusher 16 and chain drives for the conveyer 2 and a gumming wheel. The shaft 19 drives through bevel gearing, Fig. 2 (not shown), a shaft 27 carrying cams 30, 31, 30A and 31A for the stops 15 and 15A and pushers 14 and 14A and a chain drive for the feed-worm 12. It also drives a shaft 28 carrying cranks for reciprocating the wiper brushes and for operating, through gears and a Geneva stop mechanism, the pick-up 4 and the label stacks 73 and 74. A micro-switch detector connects with a solenoid-operated means to prevent a label from being fed when no corresponding bottle is present. A lateral suction extension (not shown) may be provided on the delivery member to hold the leading edge of a very wide label. Adaptation of the machine for labels which encircle a bottle-neck with overlap and for top-strap labels are mentioned, and a layout for two machines with a single conveyer is illustrated in Fig. 9 (not shown).
