Abstract
857,668. Applying closures ; bottle capsules. FORDS (FINSBURY) Ltd. April 18, 1957 [April 19, 1956 ; Feb. 28, 1957,] Nos. 11974/56 and 6757/57. Classes 125(2) and 125(3). [Also in Group XVI] A pleated metal foil cap for bottles or the like has a long skirt of which the bottom end is formed radially outwards whereby the cap has a generally cylindrical portion 1 closed at one end and a radial flange portion 3 at the other end so that the cap will stand in a stable condition when supported on the flange portion. The cap may be used in a bottle capping machine, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, comprising a shoot 5 and smoothing and sealing heads 8, 24. Caps are fed down the shoot 5 to bottles conveyed past the lower end thereof. Rods 6 spaced from the surface of the shoot engage the flanges 3 of the caps and are slightly inturned at their lower ends so as to prevent the bottom cap from slipping off the shoot until it is engaged at R by the leading edge 7 of a bottle neck and thereby carried off the shoot. A gate 10 on the shoot obstructs the flow of caps and is opened to allow one cap at a time to pass to the lower end of the shoot by means of a lever 31 contacted by a bottle as it approaches the shoot. The bottle with a cap resting on top is moved under the smoothing head 8 which smoothes the flange down about the bottle neck, and then to the sealing head 24 which closes the cap firmly against the bottle neck by means of a sheath 25 internally expansible against the cap.
