Abstract

857,305. Heating water by engine exhaust; beverage making appliances. PAWLIKOWSKI, H. R. May 4, 1959 [Sept. 5, 1958], No. 28523/58. Classes 28(1) and 129 Hot liquid is supplied in motor vehicles by a boiler 1 which is heated by the exhaust gases from the engine, is supplied with cold water from a storage tank 2 and discharges at a desired location in the vehicle. As shown, Fig. 1, boiler 1 is fitted into the exhaust piping of the engine between the exhaust manifold 10 and exhaust pipe 11, the hot gases passing through a fire-tube 29 in the boiler. Cold water is fed from tank 2 to boiler 1 through a valve 6 operated from inside the car by a rod 15 and a knob 16. The bottom of boiler 1 is connected by a tube 5 with a .vessel 3, e.g. a tea or coffee pot, fitted inside the car in a dash board space 23. The highest point of the boiler is connected by a small diameter tube 8 to tube 5, a regulator screw 9 adjusting the opening in tube 8. In operation, valve 6 is opened to fill boiler 1 and then closed after which the water is heated to boiling point. When sufficient steam pressure has built up, the boiling water is discharged into vessel 3 which contains tea leaves or coffee. Boiler 1 may be emptied by a drain valve 7 operated from the car by a rod 17 and knob 18. In a modification, the storage tank is mounted immediately above the boiler and near the engine. The tube 29 may be almost vertical or the bottom of the boiler may be fitted into an opening in the exhaust manifold 10, Fig. 5 (not shown). Otherwise, an opening may be made in the side of the manifold, the section being shown in Fig. 9. The manifold 10 may have a branch loop 20 round which the boiler is placed, Fig. 15. The Provisional Specification also mentions the use of such apparatus in railway motor locomotives or in stationary engines, e.g. operating pumps.
