Abstract
857,274. Moulding reinforced synthetic resins. MONTECATINI SOC. GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA MINERARIA E CHIMICA. Oct. 3, 1958 [Oct. 4, 1957 ; Jan. 3, 1958 ; June 9, 1958 ; Sept. 22, 1958], No. 31654/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VIII] A layer 13, Fig. 1, of glass or other fibre is passed over a support 5, impregnated with a polyester or other curable synthetic resin 15, covered with a layer 8 of impervious non- adhesive material, e.g. cellulose acetate, and pressed between rollers 6, 7, the roller 7 having a substantial covering of cellular rubber or synthetic resin, or other deformable elastic material. A further sheet 2 of cellulose acetate may be fed between the fibrous mat 13 and the support 5, so that both sides of the mat are covered during the rolling. The fibre mat is heated by infra red lamps 18 before it receives the resin from a tank 16. After rolling the laminate may pass to a corrugating apparatus as described in Specifications 748,368 and 824,755, where the cellulose acetate sheets are removed. Separate lengths of resin-reinforced fibrous material may be made in apparatus comprising a series of metal platens travelling on rollers 41, Fig. 3, and receiving a sheet of cellulose acetate from a reel 412 and fibrous material from a reel or reels 413 and cut by shears 415. A decorative sheet may be applied to the assembly if desired before it is impregbated and rolled by rollers 417, 418 similar to the rollers 7, 8. To prevent slipping the lengths of material are pressed on to the metal plates on leaving the rollers 417, 418 by bars 425 secured to moving endless chains 424. The lengths are partially cured by infra red lamps 427 before transfer to a track 428 for carrying them to a curing oven. Further apparatus are described similar to those of Figs. 1 and 3 but modified for the use of loose glass fibres as raw material.
