Abstract
Hydrocarbon diluents are recovered from off-gases from processes in which the diluent has been used as reaction medium, the rate of flow of off-gas varying periodically, by introducing the off-gas into an absorption zone where the diluent is absorbed in an oil, and stripping the diluent from the oil which is recycled to the absorption zone. The process may be an olefine polymerisation effected in the presence of pentane, isopentane, benzene, toluene, isooctane, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, decane or dodecane or other C3-C12 hydrocarbon. Off-gas saturated with the diluent is passed by a blower to the absorption tower. If the off-gas rate varies from 1,000 to 50,000 SCF per hour the blower may pass gas at a rate of 15,000 SCF per hour. The gas exit line from the absorber and the inlet to the blower are connected by a line in which gas may flow in either direction according to whether the off-gas rate is higher or lower than the blower output. Excess gas from the absorber is burned at a flare. Mineral seal oil of molecular weight 100-250 and boiling in the range 400 DEG F.-600 DEG F. is used as absorption oil and is stripped with steam.
