Class 143 In an automatic feed weigher comprising a plurality of weighing units arranged on a rotatable hollow column each weighing unit has a holder which is fed with an over-weight load, the excess material being discharged from the holder and returned to the feed by the agency of a conveyer mechanism contained in the column, the discharge and its termination being controlled by the weighing mechanism. Each weighing unit has a feed tube 1 from which, by the opening of hinged flaps 3, material may be discharged into a weighing holder 9 mounted on a pivoted weigh beam 10 which is counterweighted at 11. The quantity of material delivered to the holder 9 is regulated (at a value slightly in excess of the required final weight) by a time controlled or volumetric dispensing device or by the provision of contacts operable by the weigh beam 10 in the circuit of an electromagnet 20 operating the flaps 3. The holder 9 has an aperture 16, closable by a shutter 17, adjacent to which is a tube 6 by which material emerging from aperture 16 is returned to the central column 19 in which conveyer 8 conducts it to the source of supply. Shutter 17 is operated by means controlled by the weigh beam, for example contacts in the circuit of electromagnet 18, the shutter being opened when an over-weight load is received and re-closed when the beam is finally balanced.
