Apparatus for measuring out specified quantities of loose and flowable filling commodities by weight comprises a measuring chamber 3, 3<SP>1</SP> for pre-dispensing a quantity of the commodity of a weight below a chosen target weight, a weighing device 8 to weigh the pre-dispensed quantity, measuring chambers 6 holding small quantities of the commodity and electronic means 11 controlled by the weigher for adding to the pre-dispensed quantity the contents of one or more of the chambers 6 in accordance with the deficiency from the target weight determined by the weighing device 8. The loose material, contained in a hopper 2, passes therefrom through an opening 4 to the chamber 3, 3<SP>1</SP> and through a channel 5 to the chambers 6. The volume of the measuring chamber 3, 3<SP>1</SP> is adjustable, e.g. telescopically, so that, when it is moved to the right as seen in Fig. 1, it separates off a weight of material about 5% under the target weight and discharges it into the weighpan 7 of the weighing device. According to the actual difference from the target weight, as determined by the weighing device 8, the electronic device 11 energizes electromagnets 10 associated with the small chambers 6 whereby a requisite number thereof are shifted to the left as seen in Fig. 1 and discharge their contents into the main flow of material passing through a hopper 9 to a package 1. The chambers 6 may all be of the same size or graduated in size, but that of the smallest must be such that the weight of material it holds is within the tolerance weight. If the variation from target weight is more than the sum of the weights of material in the chambers 6, a further control mechanism, dependent on the weighing device 8, may effect adjustment of the chamber 3, 3<SP>1</SP>. Other dispensing means may be used, e.g. coarse weighers or vibratory shoots. The package may be weighed with the pre-dispensed quantity in it and the required difference added separately.
