Abstract

A hydrocarbon fuel for use in an internal combustion engine contains a plurality of heavy metal organic acid salts, the heavy metals being lead and at least one of the metals copper, zinc and tin, in a concentration not exceeding 0.1% by weight and in the form of complex compounds with one or more of the following solution-promoting agents: an amine, an imine, a nitrile, a hydroxylamine, an alcohol, a phenol, an ether, an aldehyde, a ketone, or a carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof. The lead, copper, tin and zinc salts are benzoates, oleates, stearates and butyrates; other acids which may be used to form the salts are cinnamic acid, tartaric acid and oxalic acid. The salts may be added directly to the gasoline or may be formed in situ by reacting the metal with acid previously added to the gasoline. The solution promoting agent may be aniline, quinoline, ethylamine, diethylamine; ethylenimine; benzonitrile, benzyl cyanide, acetonitrile; phenyl hydroxylamine; ethyl alcohol, amyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, glycol; phenol, o-cresol, a naphthol; ethyl ether, diisopropyl ether; benzaldehyde, salicylic aldehyde, acetaldehyde; acetone, acetophenone, diacetyl, benzil, acetoacetic ester; acetic acid, butyric acid, oleic acid, stearic acid, benzoic acid, salicylic acid, oxalic acid, phthalic acid, ethyl benzoate, isopropyl benzoate, benzamide, alanine or succinamide. The composition may also contain naphthalene. Examples of gasoline compositions are given. Specification 792,704 is referred to.
