Abstract

857,137. Nuclear fusion reactors. SCHLELEIN, F. March 10, 1959 [March 10, 1958], No. 8245/59. Class 39(4). A thermonuclear reactor comprises a hollow chamber having spaced electrodes forming opposed wall portions adapted to be connected to a source of current to produce an electric field passing between the electrodes through the chamber to maintain a nuclear reaction in a zone spaced from the walls of the chamber by the electric field between the electrodes. In Fig. 9 the chamber is of toroidal form and is made up of the main electrodes 2, 3 and auxiliary electrodes 20-30 joined together by insulating material such as glass or quartz ; positive grid electrodes are arranged in front of the main electrodes 2, 3. An axial magnetic field is provided by ring magnets 9, 10, 14, 15, and a radial magnetic field by radially magnetised ring magnets 16-19 and 116-119. A high-frequency field may be produced in the chamber of external electrodes 38, 39 which are connected to a high frequency source. The chamber is provided with a plurality of inlets and outlets 12, 13 through which it can be evacuated and filled. The apparatus may be surrounded by shields 41, 42 which may be cooled by a fluid flowing between them.
