856,998. Moulding beads &c. CHELTON (POPPITS) Ltd., and CHARLES, G. R. S. March 7, 1960 [Dec. 5, 1958], No. 39342/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VII] A polystyrene article, e.g. a bead, is produced by moulding the article, subjecting it to mechanical stress and, whilst under stress, subjecting it to chemical attack by a crazing agent to produce a pattern of flaws in the polystyrene. The body portion 10 of a bead is formed by injecting polystyrene from nozzle 22 into cavity 21 of a mould 20 containing a removable core 23. Cooling water is supplied to channels 24 in the mould and the resultant cooling sets up stresses in the body 10 which is removed from the mould and a crazing agent such as acetic acid or ethyl alcohol is applied to the cavity 13 produced by core 33 so that flaws 25 are produced. The inside of cavity 13 may be painted, dyed, or silvered and a coloured insert 14 may be used having inturned lips which engage the head 11 of an adjacent bead. Mechanical stress may also be produced by twisting or bending or by forcing an oversize mandrel into a hollow article, Specification 854,666 is referred to.
