Abstract

856,996. Magnetic recording and reproducing- apparatus. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. June 24, 1957 [June 23, 1956], No. 19744/57. Class 40 (2). A magnetic sound transducing apparatus employing an elongated magnetic recording medium comprises driving-means for maintaining constant the speed of the recording medium past the transducing heads. A magnetic tape 5 is drawn past the transducing heads 12 and 13 by a driven capstan 3 rigidly connected to a flywheel 1. Prior to passing over the transducing heads the tape passes over a roller 4 which is unitary with a flywheel 2. Pressurerollers 6 and 7 are mounted on a #-shaped bar 8 which also carries a roller 9 adapted to engage both flywheels 1 and 2 when the bar is in the position shown in dotted lines. In this position the tape 5 is stationary and the flywheel 2 is driven from the flywheel 1 so that roller 4 rotates at the same speed as the roller 3. When the bar 8 is moved to the position shown in full lines the roller 9 is disengaged from the flywheels, the tape is driven by the roller 3 and in turn drives the roller 4 which maintains a constant drag on the length of tape between the two rollers 3 and 4, due to the friction of the roller and flywheel bearings. An eddy current braking action may also be introduced by mounting a coil carrying direct current in the vicinity of the flywheel 2.
