Abstract
856,941. Clutches. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. June 17, 1957 [June 25, 1956], No. 19085/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] The stator 15, with small inner diameter, of a torque converter having a pump 12 and a turbine 14 is mounted on a one-way detent 19, the inner race member 18 of which is integral with a fixed sleeve 17 surrounding the output shaft 9. The races 18, 22 are kept concentric, and prevented from shifting axially, by bearings 23, 24 which abut respectively on the side 26 of a flange 27 integral with the output shaft 9 and a washer 36 rigid with the pump. The sleeve 17 is supported only by the bearings 23, 24, the spaces between the sleeve and the output shaft, and the sleeve and an outer sleeve 16 integral with the pump being kept free of bushings for the exhaust and supply of liquid for the converter. The bearings 23, 24 have radially disposed openings 33, 41 communicating with the above spaces. An associated clutch consists of a plate 44 rigid with the output shaft 9 between driving plates 42, 43. Liquid at higher pressure than that in the converter is supplied via duct 57 to the space 55 forcing plate 42 against plate 44 to engage the clutch. When the pressure in space 55 is removed, liquid from the converter passes through openings in the plate 43 and releases the clutch. Specification 702,709 is referred to.
