856,785. Casting-processes. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 2, 1959 [Oct. 10, 1958], No. 32383/58. Class 83 (1). A method of casting comprises pouring molten metal into a mould under vacuum and vibrating the mould during the pouring. The vibration frequency may be up to 1000 cycles/ sec. Three steel moulds on a table vibrated at 50 cycles/sec. in a vacuum-melting and casting- furnace were filled with uranium at 1430‹ C. The treatment increased the density and fineness of the grain size. A carbide or oxide may be added which may be chosen to enhance the properties of the metal as a fuel element for a nuclear reactor.
