Abstract

856,488. Glass manufacture, enamels and enamalling. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 20, 1959 [July 11, 1958], No. 22303/58. Class 56. The process of applying to the internal surface of a cylindrical tube of a fusi glass, a layer of a second glass of lower melting temperature includes the steps of coating the internal surface with a powdered second glass or enamel in a volatile suspending medium, heating the tube to remove the volatile constituents, rotating the tube while applying to the external surface at regions spaced apart along the length of the tube sufficient localised heat to fuse the powdered coating in circumferential regions of the tube and varying the regions of application of the heat axially along the tube until the whole of the powdered coating is fused, the heating, the width and spacing thereof and the rate of axial variation being such that the parts of the tube between the heated parts at any time remain sufficiently rigid to maintain the shape of the tube. The tube 1 is rotated and heated by resting a pair of rotating steel rollers 2, 3, heated from below by gas flames 4 and a current of air, passed through the tube to carry off the volatile constituents. A row of fine painted gas flames 5 are then lit, the flames being about half an inch apart and heating a zone 6 about 4 mm. wide. At intervals of about one minute the flames 5 are moved along the axis of the tube by about 4 mm. until the whole coating is fused. The process may be repeated several times to give a final inner coating of about 0.03 mm. thickness. For a sodium vapour discharge lamp of soda lime glass of composition SiO 2 70À12 Al 2 O 3 2À58; CaO 5À40; MgO 3À60; Na2O 16À82; K 2 O 0À35; B 2 O 3 0À78; SO 3 0À20, all in weight percentages, a coating of a sodium-resistant glass or enamel of the following composition is used SiO 2 8À0; Al 2 O 3 24À0; CaO 6À0; Na 2 O 14.0; B 2 O 3 48À0; Fe 2 O 3 0.01, the powder being milled in a solution of nitrocellulose in butyl acetate.
