Abstract

606,914. Coating glass surfaces. JOHNSON, MATTHEY, & CO., Ltd., WALTER, D. O., and KERRIDGE, F. E. Jan. 1, 1946, No. 29. [Class 56] [Also in Groups X, XII and XX] A window for inspecting objects at high temperatures in a furnace, kinematograph projection apparatus, &c., comprises a transparent base that will withstand a temperature of at least 400‹ C., having on one side a precious metal coating as described in Specification 599,675, which reflects infra-red rays and transmits in the visual range, and on the other side a fired coating of a liquid lustre, applied, e.g. as described in Specification 571,238, to absorb ultraviolet rays. The base may be of fused silica, mica or borosilicate or other glass, and the precious metal may be applied to a thickness giving a visual transmission of from 1 to 3 per cent. As shown, the window 1 of a tubular furnace 4 has an inner gold coating 2 and an outer fired layer of liquid lustre 3; a sheet of fused silica 5, spaced therefrom to provide an air gap 6, prevents conducted heat from melting the coating 2, or softening the glass 1.
