Abstract
856,341. Projection screens. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 27, 1957 [Nov. 30, 1956], No. 36624/56. Class 97(1). [Also in Groups VII, VIII and XXII] A metal-surfaced fabric which may be used for projection screens, comprises a porous woven, unwoven, knitted, netted or other textile fabric, or woven metal fabric, having applied to at least one surface thereof a metal foil which conforms to its surface contours and is rendered porous by rupturing inwardly at some or all of its interstices.' The foil is preferably secured by an adhesive, for example that sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Cellu-Gum". The fabric may be made from natural, synthetic or glass textile yarn, for example may be of plain woven cotton or continuous filament viscose. A suitable metal fabric is copper gauze. For the metal foil aluminium is preferred but gold, silver, copper or tin may also be used. Figures are given illustrating the reflecting and other properties of various aluminium-surfaced basic fabrics made according to the invention, for example a close weave cotton basic fabric gives good reflection for normally incident light and is useful for a projection screen in a narrow auditorium whereas an open weave viscose fabric gives reflection which is less bright but effective over a wider angle and can be used in a wider auditorium. The product may be made by pressing the foil on to the fabric e.g. by soft rubber. In Fig. 3 a web 11 of foil is coated with adhesive at 18 by a floating doctor blade and is pressed on to a web of fabric 12 in the nip of hard rollers 16 one of which carries a soft rubber belt 21 tensioned by a roller 22. In an alternative apparatus coating rollers are used and one of the rollers 16 has a soft rubber covering. In a third apparatus a sheet of adhesive coated foil is pressed to a sheet of fabric in a flat press through the medium of a sheet of soft rubber.
